Ever wondered why that jar of Lakadong turmeric makes your wallet wince a bit more? There’s meaning behind the premium—every extra rupee often buys something real.
First, Lakadong grows in a narrow geographical belt—the West Jaintia Hills. Weather, soil, altitude, and generational farming practices give it chemical and sensory traits that others often can’t replicate. Limited land availability and relatively low volumes push costs up. The recent GI tag (March 2024) formalizes that geography, adding legitimacy—and cost.
Second, curcumin content. When turmeric has 7-12% curcumin versus 2-4% in ordinary turmeric, you’re paying for the active component. That means per gram of curcumin, Lakadong often ends up being less expensive than mixing regular turmeric with additives. Labs verify Lakadong samples have high curcumin and safe heavy metal/contaminant levels.
Third, processing & quality control. High-end producers ensure minimal adulteration, careful drying, often using better packaging (like triple-layer zip-lock, barrier pouches etc.), small-batch grinding, clean equipment, and lab-testing. All of this adds cost. If a Lakadong turmeric jar is cheap, it might compromise one of these.
Fourth, organic & environmental costs. Some Lakadong turmeric is grown using low or no chemical inputs, maintaining soil health, preserving biodiversity. Sustainable methods tend to cost more (manpower, inputs, smaller scale). Some of that cost is baked into the “Lakadong premium.”
Finally, brand & marketing value. The GI tag adds recognition. When people pay for authenticity, heritage, potency, they are also paying for that story. Shipping, export, certification, labeling—they add to overhead.
Value analysis: if you buy a GI-tagged Lakadong powder with lab-assured curcumin ~7-10%, packaged in a high barrier pouch, every pinch does more work—so though the upfront cost is higher, the “value per benefit” may be higher. Versus ordinary turmeric, where you may need more quantity to achieve a similar effect, invest more in flavour, or risk adulteration or loss.
So when Lakadong looks expensive, often it is earning that price. Your choice: pay for potency, authenticity, and care, or settle for moderate quality at lower cost.
